Christmas Projects, DIY, Christmas decor, Beyond the Picket Fence, https://goo.gl/BcyJKv
I just love when friends and family keep their eyes open for junk for me.  Such was the case with this window that my father-in-law spotted and grabbed for me (actually 3 of them).

I loved that they were painted red.

If you don't have a sweet father-in-law picking junk for you, look at your local antique stores, Habitat Restore, or in the free ads for an old window.

I chose to paint NOEL on this since it worked well with the 4 panes.  You could do peace or believe in a larger paned window.  I printed NOEL out in mirror (and greyscale to save on ink) and after cleaning the window well with vinegar, taped the letters upside down to the front of the window panes.

This is what it looks like from the back of the window.

I then used Fusion Mineral Paint's Fort York Red (the perfect Christmas red!) and a small flat brush to paint the letters on the back of the glass.  I did two thin coats.

That is all!  A little picture hanging wire, and a few fresh pine branches from our Norfolk pine and I have a simple decoration perfect the porch.

Keep in mind the color of wall or siding that you will be hanging your window against when you decide what color paint you will you use to paint your word--white looks fantastic against a darker color wall.

I will be showing the entire porch in a week or so--still working on projects...

Hello and welcome to my 7th annual "12 Days of Christmas" posts.  Over the past seven years through the month of November (and sometimes into December) I have worked hard to bring my readers a dozen unique and DOABLE ideas to help personalize and celebrate the holidays.

These will not be 12 consecutive days of posts, but my goal is to always complete them in time for you to be able to recreate the ones that you like before the holiday rush.

And without further ado, 2016's first project is an easy "barn door" made from pallet wood.

Now, because this barn door would only fit baby animals, I am calling it a hayloft barn door.  I used five wider (5 1/2") pallet boards in the length they came (40 inches) and secured them with two skinnier (3 1/2") horizontal boards attached at the top and bottom.  Use the PALLET BUSTER to get those pallet boards off--so easy!

I then added a diagonal board.  I just place the board where I want it and pencil out the angle and then cut accordingly.  I drilled through the front and let the screws show because that is how authentic barn doors are made.

I painted it pretty sparsely with red latex paint.  After painting  the door, I distressed it using the claw of a hammer, nails, and a chain (great if you have any aggression you need to get out).  I then stained the whole thing, front and back with Early American Minwax stain.  I also added two old hinge halves I had.  You could age a new hinge with vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and salt.

If I had a fireplace mantle, I would so prop this barn door up on it with a wreath for the holidays.  But, it is equally as adorable on a porch or it would be cute propped against a wall with the stockings hanging off of it.  It adds a great pop of color and a rustic feel to your Christmas decor.

christmas ideas, decor, DIY, christmas crafts,https://goo.gl/7NTkZ1
If you have followed my blog at all, you might remember that each Christmas I like to share a candy cane holder idea. This stems from a childhood memory of a little cardboard Santa's boot that we hung by the door to hold candy canes for visitors.

I have carried on this tradition, using different candy cane holders each year.  This year's is a simple printable decoupaged onto a jar.

You can get the FREE Printable HERE.  I provided four/per page so you can make candy cane jars for your friends too!  But, this little printable would also make an adorable cover for a card or would be cute in a small frame.

After cutting out the printable (I left some white space around the edges) I sprayed it with a couple light coats of clear spray to prevent the ink from running with Modge Podge glue.

I then decoupaged it to a clean pickle jar I had, being careful to seal down the edges.  When the glue was dry, I added more to the jar and the snow on the label and sprinkled glitter all over it.

I used a scrap board that was previously painted red to attach the jar too.  If you don't have any scrap wood you can use a wood plaque from the craft store or this jar is equally as cute just sitting on the counter.

I set the board on the wood and marked where I wanted to drill holes to hang the jar. I drilled fairly large holes because I used fat twine to secure the jar.

I got this candy cane twine at the dollar spot at Target--I may have purchased 5 rolls of it because i loved it so!  Tie a tight knot

and then tie the twine tightly around the jar.

I added a little tissue paper inside the jar to lift the candy canes up a bit--I am hoping to find some jumbo candy canes to add to it.

Handing out a candy cane to guests is a simple way to say I am glad you are here.  This would make an adorable teacher gift too!
